On Friday, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said that the government is aware and is also concerned that drugs are also a public health issue and not just a matter of national security. With this, they are planning to build a 10-hectare drug rehabilitation facility at Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija.

This particular project would include housing, farming and other sustainable green programs for drug users. “So when clients come out, they have learned some skills and also sustainable things,” Abella explained.

However, the Palace made it clear that the rehabilitation project of the Department of Health cannot accommodate everybody, since there are already 600,000 surrendered drug users. The rehab programs of DOH for drug dependents last for only up to six months.

Special attention may be given to at least 60,000 drug dependents, according to Abella, and the rest may submit themselves to treatment with the help of their community and faith-based groups.

President Rodrigo Duterte has urged human rights advocates and those who are criticizing the massive crackdown on illegal drugs, so they would see for themselves the situation of the country. His statement came after UN special rapporteurs reminded the government to respect the right to life and safety for all Filipinos. ASCS
