The Philippine National Police (PNP) has confirmed on Saturday night that the bombing that happened at a night market in Davao City was caused by an improvised explosive device or IED.

PNP chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa said that a Special Investigative Task Group (SITG) that was formed to probe the incident confirmed that it was an IED. Furthermore, the IED had yet to be fully put back together but it could probably be a mortar round.

On the other hand, the Davao regional police are currently tracking down 4 “persons of interest” but did not disclose more details aside from them being composed of two men and two women.

Investigators have on hand a sketch of the suspects but they have not been released or made available to the public.

The ASG claimed that the incident was their own doing but the PNP couldn’t be so sure about it.

“We have our own way of validating if that claim is really authentic,” Dela Rosa said. They are also validating the possibility of the real culprit being a group that have splintered from the ASG.

“Pinakamalapit dito is yung problema diyan sa Sulu,” he said, referring to the ongoing clashes of the Armed Forces of the Philippines against the terrorist group.

The Davao regional police have at least 8 witnesses to the incident and Regional Director Chief Superintendent Manuel Gaerlan said that they are not in the custody of the police but their identities will be kept confidential. ASCS
