Leyte Narco-politician killed inside prison during “firefight”

Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. of Albuera, Leyte died in a “firefight” after allegedly resisting arrest at the Baybay, Leyte Sub-Provincial Jail, early morning of November 5.

According to a police incident report, two detainees died between the firefight of Espinosa and Raul Yap and the operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Northern Leyte (CIDG8).

“Detectives of Northern Leyte CIDG8 led by PCI Leo Laraga together with RMU8 as participating unit implemented two search warrants inside the Sub-Provincial jail at Brgy. Hipusngo, Baybay City, Leyte in which a firefight ensued between the suspects (subject of the search and warrant) and the CIDG8 operatives that resulted [in] the [deaths] of the said suspects namely Rolando Espinosa and Raul Yap,” the report narrated.

In a report from Radyo Inquirer 990, Police Chief Juvy Espinido of ALbuera Leyte mentioned the CIDG operatives went to the prison to serve a warrant of arrest for illegal possession of firearms, when the two allegedly resisted. At past 4 in the morning, Espinosa and Yap were killed.

The report added the raiding team is now securing the crime scene and waiting for the SOCO-8 to arrive for processing the scene.

Possession of drugs and illegal firearms were charged against Espinosa after a raid in his house yielded at least 11.5kg and several firearms and ammunition.

Mayor Espinosa requested earlier for protective police custody to protect his life and tagged biggest drug lord and son Kerwin Espinosa.

Meanwhile, the younger son was arrested in Abu Dhabi, UAE and remains under their custody while investigation of authorities is still ongoing.
