According to Italian Media, it was the third major quake in the same region in a span of two months.

The seismic shocks were divine punishment for the offence to the family and the dignity of marriage in particular civil unions, Calvacoli says on Radio Maria.

The said radio station disregarded his comments and the Vatican announced a stinging reproach, saying the priest’s idea of a merciless God was a pagan belief during the pre-Christian era on Friday.

Next in rank in the Vatican’s powerful Secretariat of State, Archbishop Angelo Becciu quoted Cavalcoli’s opinions were offensive to believers and disgraceful for non-believers.

Becciu asked for forgiveness and reminded the quake victims about the solidarity and support of Pope Francis for them.

Meanwhile, Cavalcoli refused to get back his words, insisting to another radio station that the sins of man caused the earthquakes and reminded the people of Vatican to read their catechism.

Last month, legislative measures on gay civil unions in Italy took effect making it the last country in Western Europe to legally allow same-sex relationships.
