DA secretary-designate Piñol to Inquirer: Lousy inquirer scribe twists story on Duterte 'friendship'

Department of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Manny Piñol burst his thoughts against Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) for highlighting him as a personal friend of the President Rodrigo Duterte for his alleged reappointment for his current designation using his Facebook account.

Piñol exclaimed himself as a former professional journalists who respected editorial independence of media outfits which was in contrast to what the PDI has done.

“I consider myself "fair game" to the media being a public official who must be transparent and accountable to the public. But early today, a story which was posted on Inquirer.Net which I understand is the main story of the Business Page of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, really got to my nerve because of how it was slanted by reporter Ronnel Domingo, "Emmanuel F. Piñol said he expected to be reappointed agriculture secretary after the Commission on Appointments (CA) bypassed him earlier this month, saying that his “personal friend” President Duterte told him so” Manny said in his facebook status.

He added that the succeeding paragraph “Piñol crafts masaganang ani project” was off tangent to the title given to the article.

“What was reprehensible in the way the reporter wrote the story was his use of the phrase "personal friend" to make it appear that it was the reason why I was confident of being reappointed by President Rody Duterte as Agriculture Secretary,” the secretary designate added.

According to Manny, the transcripts of the press conference are the proof that he used the phrase personal friend to point out his relationship with President Duterte when it comes to eliminating corruption inside Department of Agriculture.

He further explained himself that Manny couldn’t involved himself in corruption because aside from the law, he would also betray the friendship he has with the President.

“By misusing the phrase "personal friend" in the context of the President's assurance that he would reappoint me as Secretary of Agriculture, Inquirer reporter Ronnel Domingo showed his bias if not incompetence as a reporter,” Piñol exclaimed pointing the media publication.

Manny said in his last statement that he believes the Department of Agriculture deserves to be covered and featured by a journalist who could understand the said field and not a writer who just knows to spread gossips and intrigues.
