Duterte to De Lima: Go ahead, impeach me

President Rodrigo Duterte dared Senator Leila de Lima to file an impeachment case against him for shielding alleged police officers who are connected with the death of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa.

In an interview during the inauguration opf the Bicol International Airport, Duterte challenged the opposition to file for impeachment. “They can go ahead, bakit pa mas maraming daldal? Sige na, impeach me. Hayaan mo sila. Sige impeachable, go ahead.”

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) declared the Albuera mayor died in a rubout and not a shootout, however the president believes the point of view of the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Eastern Visayas.

According to De Lima, Duterte’s statement was a “betrayal of public trust.”

On Thursday, De Lima boldly labeled Duterte as a murderer and father of all EJKs or extrajudicial killings for protecting the image of the officers tagged in the death of Espinosa while under police custody.

The lady senator also said that Duterte’s action towards on the killing is an admission that he himself ordered the murder of Espinosa.

On the other hand, Chief presidential legal counsel Secretary Salvado Panelo slammed De Lima’s statement quoting that Duterte was only doing his duty to guard members of the PNP.

"Why should it be an impeachable offense? Is it even an offense? It is a duty being done by president?" Panelo said in a chance interview with reporters in Malacañang.
