Antonio Contreras slams rappler: Rappler’s ‘intenseful’ rapping

Political analyst Antonio Contreras slammed social media news provider Rappler on its lowly performance in his column published on February 2.

Contreras emphasized the said news site is becoming so low that it is no longer aware that the people behind this site are now ‘trolls.’

“HOW could they go so low? I mean this media company that prides itself on not being mainstream media but also not a blogging site. Yet, upon closer analysis of the narratives which have come out of its website, one can’t help but wonder whether this trend-setting pretender has indeed outed itself to be simply a trolling center that sometimes posts legitimate news,” Antonio said.

Rappler according to the political analyst was founded by Maria Ressa emulating the Huffington Post however, unlike the said news provider, the founder invested in fresh graduates who are not even degree holders of journalism but people who came from elite schools.

“Rappler hoped that youthful exuberance and badass attitude could compensate for experience that should have started with initiation in the police beat where real journalists are tried and tested. The result was disastrously alarming,” he added.

Contreras pointed out that the writers under the said site are full of arrogance. He even compared the writers of Rappler to Maki Pulido who earned her image by running towards the gates of Malacañang during the EDSA 2 while June Veneracion who almost lost his life during a firefight in basilan.

“Journalists are supposed to be ethical, objective and neutral. They should be above the fray, and should as much as possible take criticisms as part of the hazards of the profession. It is one thing to explain and another to attack. Yet on several occasions, writers of Rappler openly quarreled with netizens in the comment section of their news features in social media,” he also said comparing to the actions of Rappler.
