Duterte will now enjoy 1-year impeachment immunity. Yay!

President Rodrigo Duterte can no longer be ousted for one year as he now posses immunity through the constitutional process of impeachment.

According to Oriental Mindoro Representative Reynaldo Umali, the chairman of House of Representative for Committee on Justice told reporters on May 22 that Duterte can now enjoy the said protection as provided for under the Constitution.

The protection kicked in last May 9 according to Umali during the house session.

“The one-year immunity starts when an impeachment process is initiated. And under a Supreme Court ruling, initiation means referral of a complaint to the committee on justice,” he said.

Complaints against Duterte will no longer be accommodated for a period of one year or until May 8m, 2018, Umali added.

On May 15, the Umali committee threw out the Alejano complaint for lacking in substance while the President was in China. The committee approved its report yesterday.

The committee chief also expects the House to concur with the dismissal of the case this week or on Monday since the president is on official business in Moscow, Russia.

Magdalo Party-list Gary Alejano raised the extrajudicial killings in his complaint pointing out that Duterte is pursuing a state policy of killings in his war on drugs campaign.

In addition, the party-list rep also tagged the president to possess illegal wealth with a sum of P2.2 billion.
