However, Solicitor General Jose Calida gave assurance to Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno that she has nothing to fear that President Rodrigo Duterte might follow the same path taken by late President Ferdinand Marcos in his declaration of martial law in 1972.

He emphasized that Duterte is not Marcos.

"One thing I can assure you, your Honor, President Duterte is not President Marcos," said Calida during the second  day of oral arguments on the constitutionality of the president's declaration of martial law in Mindanao when the Maute group seized marawi City.

Calida added there is nothing to fear from Duterte since he ordered the military to respect and protect the constitutional rights of the Filipino people.

Sereno was doubtful on how Duterte's martial law would be different with Marcos' due to Calida's vague reply. "Well, I know. The names are very different," said Sereno.

Albay Representative Edcel Lagman, one of the petitioners against  Duterte's martial law said the unprecedented human rights abuses were being committed by the military in Marawi City based on a report given by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.
