Duterte frankly tells Misuari: I cannot give you your own land

President Rodrigo Duterte said Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founding chairman Nur Misuari to be amenable to the proposed shift of the government to federalism however he can not give land to the leader.

In a meeting held in Davao City on June 2, Duterte shared details about their conversation. He asked Misuari if he had any objection to his administration’s plan to transform the country’s government style from unitary to federal where powers of the national government will be devolved to self-governing states or regions.

The President together with his allies has expressed their plan to provide a greater countryside development pointing out the centralized governance has stunted growth in the provinces.

“Sabi ko, ‘Nur prangkahan mo ako, are you still interested ng federal government? Wala ako ibigay sa iyo na bayan, it’s not mine to give,’” Duterte said in a speech before soldiers in Carmen, Cotabato.

On the other hand, Duterte told Misuari that he could also put a new setup for them under a federal government, where Misuari and his group could exercise greater control over its area of jurisdiction.

The President told everyone that Misuari seemed to be positive to his idea and even offered to send his men to help the government uniformed men who are currently fighting with ISIS in Marawi City.

“Alam mo naman okay ako. As a matter of fact, I’m offering 2,000 of my men to join your forces,” Duterte quoted Misuari as saying.

Misuari is facing rebellion charges over the 2013 Zamboanga siege but the government has asked the court to give him temporary pass so he could participate in the peace talks.

The MNLF leader is a former governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
