Hontiveros says SC decision on martial law sets dangerous precedent

Senator Risa Hontiveros believes the Supreme Court decision upholding the validity of martial law in Mindanao sets a dangerous precedent on how President Rodrigo Duterte will handle acts of violence and lawlessness will be.

Hontiveros said in a statement that the ruling was a missed opportunity for the Supreme Court to stand up against creeping authoritarianism.

“The decision sets a dangerous precedent for undemocratic governance. Lest we forget, bad precedents stem from seemingly justifiable measures,” Hontiveros exclaimed.

She added martial law becomes a silver bullet for a false peace and became thee default response of the state to address acts of violence and lawlessness.

The lady senator also stressed that the decision of the SC should not serve as the free pass of administration to extend martial law all through out the country.

President Duterte issued Proclamation No. 216 on May 23 declaring martial law in Mindanao  following the attack of the Maute terrorist group in Marawi.

During the SC's en banc session, 11 magistrates voted to dismiss the consolidate petitions seeking to nullify the declaration of Martial Law.
