Will history repeat itself?

The Malacañang Palace has called on Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to resign to protect the judiciary from further damage.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque emphasized that if another impeachment of a justice will be done, instability of the judicial branch will be expected to happen.

"I call upon Chief Justice Sereno to really consider resigning if only to spare the institution from any further damage," saiid Roque during a press briefing held in Malacañang, November 6.

He further said it is high time for Sereno to think the after math if she will beousted like what happened to ex chief justice Corona.

"It cannot be that there will be a second instance that a sitting Chief Justice will be removed as a result of decision of the Senate. We cannot wait for that," he added.

The spokesperson on the other hand shared he is telling the sentiment of President Rodrigo Duterte.  "Of course, the President wants her to be removed altogether ‘no, by all means,” he said.

Sereno is facing impeachment complaint in the House of Representatives.

Following the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona, Sereno was appointed.

Roque, meanwhile denied the executive branch has done anything to undermine the judiciary's independence emphasizing that Sereno was the one who place the judiciary in jeopardy.

“She has only to blame herself if she feels that the impeachment proceeding has affected the independence of the judiciary,” Roque said.
